Music Video Analysis

The song Firework is sung by Katy Perry. In this video, reality is presented as not everyone being perfect, which is definitely far from almost all music videos these days. There is a bald Cancer patient, an overweight teenage girl at a pool party, and even two gay teenage boys. Firework is almost like a complete 180 from music videos that artists such as Ke$ha, Miley Cyrus, or various rap artists make. Although it still seems like everyone can dance in the video, which seems to happen in every music video, although it makes sense, considering if people couldn't dance, it might get a bit painful to watch. The creeds and values in this video are also quite different from most music videos these days. It's showing that no matter who you are, you're still amazing and you need to show people that. I think this video would appeal to many teenagers since Katy Perry is a popular singer targeted at my age group. Also, it may appeal to some adults since it targets topics that are more mature than typical teenage songs these days. Lastly, in my own opinion, this is a good music video. A little cheesy with the firework editing, but overall, it's good. It addresses different topics than other songs, and all in all it delivers a very powerful message when you watch it.

Media Profile

I believe that media is very important in my life. As a teenager I am typically reading, listening to music, or going on the Internet. All of these things are connected to the media in some way and I am connected to it for most of my day.

One of the types of media that is the most important to me is reading. I have always loved to read (started reading Harry Potter when I was six!) and I still read on a regular basis and love to buy new books. Books are able to take me to different places and allow me to be creative and think up images as I read descriptions. Another part of media that is important to me is the Internet. The Internet allows me to learn things after they happen in a matter of minutes and has endless amounts of things I can do to keep me entertained, whether it be watching YouTube videos, looking at pictures or going on Facebook. The last part of media that I enjoy is film. I own a lot of movies and I love spending a lazy day on the weekend watching my favourite scary movies and the occasional romantic comedy.

Today's popular culture is...interesting. The fact that so many of us are entertained by shows like Jersey Shore or Teen Mom make me fear for society. We have incredibly low standards and anything seems to make us laugh. What's going to be next? As for the technology that's coming out, some of it is amazing. Though some are definitely not needed. Such as the Kindle. I, personally, am a book lover and hate the fact that the books are being replaced by a piece of technology. People should continue to read actual books instead of spending a ridiculous amount of money to read books on a Kindle. People are beginning to rely too much on the new technology and media and I think that soon we will go too far. As for me, I typically use the media for entertainment purproses. Especially the Internet, movies and books. I'm not as much into the television since, in my opinion, there are way too many reality TV shows ruining everything now.

As for the desert island choices I would choose a TV show, a movie and a book. My choice for a TV show would probably be Friends. I've loved Friends for a while and probably started watching it when I was a bit too young for that type of show, but thankfully I was naive enough to not understand some of the content. I still love the show now, and own all ten seasons and they always cheer me up and I never get bored of the episodes, even though I've seen all of them- multiple times!

For the movie and book, I'm going to cheat a little and choose all 7 parts of the Harry Potter series. Well, 8 with the movies, but we'll let that slide. I've loved Harry Potter since I was six and it holds a special place in my heart, although many people find that stupid to be that in love with a series. But Harry Potter isn't just a series to me, it's basically a part of my life. Those books have made me laugh, cry, question and think. They are a must have for me and could really never imagine my life without them.
